MacLeod Leads Pair of Wins at IUP Dual Meet

Indiana, PA. – The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team has gotten off to one of its hottest starts in program history in 2024-2025 and looked to continue that success at IUP on Saturday. The Cardinals would pick up two gold medals as a team, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Crimson Hawks 116-62. The Cardinals youth continued to be on display in the dual meet as the Cardinals battled one of the top programs in the region.

On the individual side, it was freshman Euan MacLeod that took the spotlight with the lone win of the day. It would come in the final individual event of the night as he took on the 100-Yard Breaststroke against a pair of Crimson Hawks and two of his own teammates. MacLeod just edged out the Crimson Hawk's top swimmer, Jeremiah Gocotano, swimming a time of 1:00.26. For MacLeod, he got back in the win column for the first time since the Malone meet as he continues his strong freshman season. The Cardinals would end the day with back-to-back wins, as their A team took home the win in the 200-Yard Freestyle Medley. He teamed up with Arvid Hoglund, Brian Kirby, and Gustav Lofqvist and the foursome took the top spot at 1:28.01. It gave the Cardinals some momentum as they head into the final two weeks before the mid-season invitational.

The day began with the 200 yard medley relay where MacLeod, Lofqvist, Hoglund, and Evan Yost would get things started with a silver medal. The foursome swam a time of 1:57.55 falling just 9 seconds short of the top spot in the field. The individual events would follow as Nathan Riegal Kick things off in the 200 yard freestyle. He finished third with a time of 1:54.99 In the Cardinals were off and running in the Hoglund's first individual event would be the 50 yard freestyle where he took third with a time of 22.06. Wheeling continued to place in the top three throughout the night as Kirby was up next in the 200 yard individual medley. He would take third with a time of 2:10.94 As the Cardinal string of top three finishes went through the first four events of the night. Yost kept things going in the 100-Yard Butterfly (55.44) and Lofqvist added a second place finish in the 49.84.

The final two individual events for the day were the 100-yard backstroke and a 500 yard freestyle. Evan Yost rounded out his day in the backstroke finishing third at 58.89. Riegal would swim in the loan long, taking third at 5:10.31.

The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team returns to action on Saturday, November 9th, when they host Davis & Elkins at 1 PM
