Cleveland, OH. – The Wheeling University Wrestling team continued their tournament schedule on Sunday as they traveled to Case Western University. The Cardinals competed in two different categories, finishing 18
th in the Freshman and Sophomore class and 26
th in the open category. The Cardinals had one placer on the day, while three Cardinals picked up at least two wins on the day.
After getting the win to close out the dual meet against Frostburg State, it was
Gavin Harper who once again led the way at 285. Harper would kick-off the day against unattached Isaac Lehman (Tiffin) and would earn a 12-3 Major Decision to get things started. He would move on to the Quarterfinal round, where he picked up his team-leading third pinfall of the season. This time it was over Josh Lanka (Rochester Institute of Technology), as he got the pin in the final round at the 6:11 mark. His semifinal match would come against Cleveland State's Mekhi Bradley and despite battling, Harper would fall in a 4-1 decision. He bumped to the third place match, where he would battle unattached wrestler Richard Thornton (Tiffin) and he picked up a 9-1 Major Decision. It was Harper's first tournament placement as he finished 3-1 and improved to 6-3 on the season.
The other two Cardinals to pick up multiple wins were
Caden Canning (149lb) and
Isaac Valdez (174lb). Canning was one of two Cardinals wrestlers to compete in the open and after dropping a Major Decision in the first round, he made a run in the consolation bracket. He battled John Carroll's Anthony Santagata and picked up his first pinfall of the season in 4:11. He followed that up with an 18-12 Decision win over Cleveland State's AJ Parish, before ending his night falling to Seton Hill's Ty Linsenbigler in a 17-0 Tech Fall. Valdez would get his first win in his opening match, taking down Rochester Institute of Technology's Kyle Jacobs in a 14-8 decision. He would drop a Major Decision in the Quarterfinal round, before picking up his final win in the consolation bracket. He beat John Carroll's Niko Kalamaras in a 7-3 decision, before falling in a 7-6 decision to end his night.
Wheeling had five other wrestlers finish 1-2 on the day, with
Brent Bosley (125),
Brian Crevar (167),
Chris Johnson (197),
Christian Osborne (133), and
Hunter Bittinger (174) all earning a win. Bosley and Crevar each earned their wins in their opening matches, with Bosley pinning unattached wrestler Edwin Mooney in 2:55, while Crevar earned a Major Decision over John Carroll's Josh Hayden. Johnson equaled his record from the first tournament of the season, earning his win in the consolation bracket over Salem's Clayton Downs in a 22-18 Decision. Meanwhile, Osborne and Bittinger each picked up their first wins of the season, with Osborne earning a 10-3 decision over Ithaca's Kendrick Pellicci and Bittinger earning a 5-1 decision over UINDY's Duncan Hand.
The Wheeling University Wrestling team returns to action on Wednesday, November 13
th, when they take on Washington & Jefferson in dual meet action at 7 PM.
