Indianapolis, IN. – After battling through the first half of their season, the Wheeling University Wrestling team (3-1, 2-1) took on one of the toughest NCAA DII tournaments in the country on Saturday when they traveled to the 46th Annual Midwest Classic. Wheeling would send seven wrestlers to the event, with all seven competing at the event for the first times in their careers. The Cardinals would spread out three wins across their seven competitors and, while they did not advance to the second day of competition, they had five different wrestlers earn one win on the day.
Leading the way were a pair of point scorers in Jack Dinwiddie and Jake Taylor, who each finished with 2.5 points on the day. Dinwiddie would get things started at the 141lb weight class and started things off against Pitt-Johnstown's Chad Ozias. He would battle into the second round, but eventually fell by pinfall at the 4:24 mark. He would move down to the consolation bracket and, after receiving a bye, would battle Salem's Riley Curran. He would earn his first win of the day with a 17-0 tech fall at the 7:00 minute mark to even his record at 1-1. However, his run would come to an end in the third round of the consolation bracket, when he fell to Colorado Mesa's AJ Hague in an 8-2 decision to round out his day. Taylor would wrestle in the 165 lb weight class and, like Dinwiddie, would be pinned in his first match of the night. As he got to the consolation bracket, and earned his first win in a match-up with Emmanuel's Nate Stratton. He would earn a Tech Fall victory at the 6:05 mark and evened his record at 1-1. He would fall to West Liberty's Bodie Morgan in a 12-3 Major Decision to end his night.
The other Cardinal to pick up a win on the night was Mannix Wasco, who finished 1-2 in the 149 pound weight class. He would begin his day against Adams State's Angel Flores and battled across three rounds. He would end up falling in an 11-1 Major Decision to head to the consolation bracket. After receiving a bye in his first consolation match, Wasco would earn a meeting with Southwest Minnesota State's Jacob Messner. Wasco would earn his first win of the day, coming in the form of a 10-3 decision as he moved to 1-1 on the day. However, his day would end against Seton Hill's Ty Linsen igler as he fell in a 13-6 decision. The other four Cardinal wrestlers would not pick up a win, with each going 0-2 to round out the day.
At 184 pounds, Kyle Snider would fall in his championship round match, but was on his way to a bounce back in the consolation round. However, he would suffer an injury that brought his run to an end at the 3:59 mark. Jaxon Burcher would compete at 197 pounds, dropping a pair of tech falls by scores of 18-0 and 17-1. Bradley Spencer (157 lb) and Xander Kartes (174 lb) wrapped up the day, with both finishes 0-2 to round out the night.
The Wheeling University Wrestling team returns to action on Saturday, January 3rd, when they compete at the Fairmont State Invitational at 9 AM.
