Patrick Kirby Paces Men’s Swimming with Two Individual Wins in Victory over Malone

Va. - The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team has been floating on top of the pack as of late as they were back in the Alma Grace McDonough Center Natatorium on Saturday. They hosted a dual meet against Malone and picked up their third straight win as they took down the Pioneers. 138-48. The Cardinals swept the day, picking up 11 first place finishes in 11 events, as they moved to 4-1 overall on the season.

The biggest day for the Cardinals came courtesy of sophomore Patrick Kirby, who would win two individual events while being part of one of the winning relay teams on the day. After swimming primarily in long distance events last season, Kirby got his day started in the 200-Yard Freestyle. He would take top honors by 10 seconds, swimming a time of 1:54.79 to kick-off the day. He came back 12 events later in the 100-Yard Backstroke, and would grab win #2 on the day. This one would come via a five second margin as he swam a time of 58.35 to get the win. His final victory came in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, where he teamed up with  Arvid Hoglund, Alex Ferebee, and EJ Cooper. The foursome would finish with a time of 3:31.63 in what was the Cardinal's largest win of the day, beating Malone by 12 seconds.

The winning started right from the get-go with the 200-Yard Medley Relay and it kept coming fast and furious. The team of Euan MacLeod, Gustav Lofqvist, Sarp Killic, and Alberto Kofinke kicked off the day with a time of 1:41.82 to get the Cardinals into the win column. Long distance would be next, with Nathan Reigel picking up the first of two wins on the day. His first came in the 1000-Yard Freestyle, where he swam a time of 11:00.45, beating Malone by 49 seconds, and he added a win in the 500-Yard Freestyle in the 20th event, posting a time of 5:15.64. After Kirby picked up win #1, Lofqvist was up next in the 50-Yard Freestyle, swimming a time of 23.29 to take the top spot. The 200-Yard Individual Medley was up next, and MacLeod added to his trophy case, swimming a time of 2:05.88 to take the top spot.

As the short distance events continued, Arvid Hoglund would get his first win of the day in the 100-Yard Butterfly, swimming a time of 53.57. Killic would continue the success in the 100-Yard Freestyle (49.93) before Kirby picked up his second win in the 100 Backstroke. The 100-Yard Breaststroke would be the final event of the day and MacLeod would round things out with a win, swimming a time of 1:01.14.

The Wheeling University Men's Swimming team returns to the pool on Saturday, October 26th, when they compete in a tri-meet against Bethany and Chatham at Bethany College with first swims at 1 PM.
