Geneva, OH. – Over each of the last two seasons, the Wheeling University Men's Indoor Track & Field team has had at least one representative at the NCAA Championships. As they opened 2024 on Saturday, the team looks to continue that trend as they took on the SPIRE Midwest Classic, hosted by the SPIRE Institute. The sprinters led the way once again for the Cardinals, with junior
Moses Koroma making a case to return to that championship event.
His top performance came in the 60-Meter Hurdles, where he started the day with a time of 8.15 seconds in the preliminaries. He took the top time in the third heat and would be joined by teammate
Damian Jackson in qualifying for the finals of the event. It was in that finals race that Koroma really shined, dropping his prelim time by .17 seconds. He would take the top spot in the field with a time of 7.98 as he set a new season best and ran the 5th fastest time in the nation in the event. Jackson would take home fifth place in the event, running a time of 8.42 second to round out the field. It would be the first of two events for Koroma as he also qualified for the finals of the 60-Meter Dash. He would finish fifth in the field with a time of 7.02 seconds while teammates
Calvin Blunt finished 8th (7.08) and Tre Holloway finished 9th (7.12).
The track events would continue to lead the way as
Jabar Sellers was up next in the 400-Meter Dash. He would finish 7th with a time of 50.37 as he started 24 off strong.
Joshua Boehm would be next in the 300-Meter Dash and picked up the Cardinal's second highest individual finish. He placed second with a time of 34.40 seconds as he continues his strong start to 2023-2024. The sprinters wrapped up the day in the 200-Meter Dash as Sellers and Jackson led the way taking 26th (22.98) and 28th (23.08) respectively. The final track event came from the distance runners as
Hunter Tomich,
CJ Anderson, and
Tyler Crook ran in the 3000 Meter Run. Tomich would lead the way with a 42nd place finish with a time of 9:26.26 to set a new PR in the event by 13 seconds.
In the field events, it was
Daimar Ivey leading the way competing in a pair of jumping events. His top distance came in the triple jump, where he took second place with A distance of 13.48 meters, finishing just .27 meters out of the top spot. He would come back in the Long Jump and rounded out hi day with a 26th place finish with a time of 5.20 meters. The final Cardinal to compete was Zay Lewis, who made his debut in the Men's Shot Put. He threw a distance of 9.70 meters to finish 42nd in the field.
