Box Score 2 Winter Haven, FL. – The Wheeling University Softball team (1-15, 0-0) wrapped up their week long trip to Winter Haven, Florida on Friday with a pair of games against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponents. Wheeling was looking to get a win before they headed back to Wheeling, but it wasn't to be as they fell in both halves of the doubleheader to drop to 1-7 on the week. Wheeling began the day with a 9-5 loss at the hands of Lock Haven before wrapping things up with a 13-1 loss to Seton Hill to round out the day.
Game One:
Lock Haven 9,
Wheeling 5
The Cardinal's first game of the day was am early afternoon contest against Lock Haven University.
Maria Clark would get the game one start, but was pulled after just two innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out a batter.
Randi Holder would then be called upon for the final out of the inning, but the Cardinals were down 2-0 early on. The offense would pick up their pitching staff in the top of the second as
Candela Garcia Cabedo started the top of the second off with a single.
Leah Klockowski then followed with a single and the Cardinals had runners at first and third with nobody out.
Natalie Stoner would then reach on a Fielder's Choice, bringing home Cabedo to make it a 2-1 game.
The next batter was
Makie Paxson and she would end up tying the game with an RBI double that brought home Klockowski. Two batters later,
Madison George would drive in the third run of the inning with an RBI single and the Cardinals had their first lead of the day at 3-2. However, Lock Haven would respond with three more runs in the bottom of the second and the Cardinals once again found themselves behind 5-3. Holder would respond with a scoreless third inning before bringing her day to an end. Holder would last 2.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two. The score remained 5-3. Until the top of the fifth inning as
Jenna Hollerich drove an RBI single to right to make it a 5-4 game.
However, the Eagles would end up sealing the game in the bottom of that fifth inning, adding four more runs and extending their lead to 9-4. In the top of the sixth, the Cardinals would get one of those fins back as
Maddie Munoz line a two out triple to center field to put the Cardinals in business. George would drive in the final run of the game as Wheeling would end up falling 9-5. It was a big game for
Madison George, who went a perfect 4-4 with four singles and two RBI.
Makie Paxson was the other Cardinal to collect multiple hits, going 2-4 out of the leadoff spot with an RBI.
Natalie Stoner and
Jenna Hollerich would drive in the final two RBI of the day as the Cardinals looked for one more bounce back in the final game of the trip.
Game Two:
Seton Hill 13,
Wheeling 1
The final game of the day would be the third meeting of the year between Wheeling and Seton Hill. The Griffins would start out the day with three runs in the top of the first inning, putting Wheeling behind the eight ball early.
Jenee Brodeur got the start for the Cardinals, and would end up lasting 3.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while walking three batters. Seton Hill would get those final two runs in the top of the third and the Cardinals found themselves down 5-0 after three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, with
Jamie Anderson now in the circle, the Cardinals offense would get on the board for their only run of the day.
Madison George would double to start the inning and a groundout would move to third on a
Brooke Slomkowski groundout.
Anna Florczak would drive in the only Cardinals run of the day with an RBI single that made it a 5-1 game. Seton Hill would get a run back in the top of the fifth and added seven runs in the top of the sixth to put the eight-run rule into effect. The Cardinals would end the day going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth and the game would end with Wheeling falling 13-1.
Madison George continued her big day, going 2-3 in game two to bring her total for the day to 6-7.
Anna Florczak would drive in the only run of the game for the Cardinals, and finished 1-3 with an RBI. Natalke Stoner and
Brooke Slomkowski each added a single to round out the day.
The Wheeling University Softball team now gets ready to return home as they return to action on Wednesday, March 15th, when they take on Ohio Dominican at 3 PM
