Three Top 10 Finishers Breaks the Ice on Women’s Track Indoor Season Opener

Youngstown, OH. – On Friday, the Wheeling University Women's Track & Field team kicked off Indoor Season at the Youngstown State Ice Breaker. It was a big day for the Cardinals as they had three top 10 finishers and set some strong baselines to build off of. As their only event in the 2023 portion of the schedule, the Cardinals looked to use this as a springboard as they prepare for 2024.

The top performance of the day came on the track as the sprinters led the way in the 60-Meter Dash. The event began with the preliminary event as four Cardinals competed with Ka'niya McGowan, Shannon Farrow, Susan Trammel, and Deja Ryals competing. McGowan would have the top preliminary time, taking 16th at 7.86, while Farrow followed her in 19th at 7.87. Farrow and Rylas advanced to the qualifying round, with Farrow leading the way with a second place finish as she equaled her time from the preliminary. Ryals would also pick up a top 10 finish in the event, setting a new PR with a time of 7.97 to take eighth. Mya Stackhouse rounded out the group, finishing 55th with a time of 8.71.

The sprinters continued the Festivities as four more Cardinals were up next in the 60-Meter Hurdle. After a strong junior campaign, Isha Sesay picked up right where she left off, taking 11th in the preliminaries with a time of 9.25. Jenay Soumahro would round out the top 20 finishers, finishing 14th with a time of 9.33. The 200-Meter dash was up next and Susan Trammel kept the top 20 finishes coming, taking 13th with a time of 25.76. The mid-distance events would follow as Jenay Soumahro led the way with a 28th place finish with a time of 1:01.95. Delaney Miller would follow behind her with a PR effort, running a 1:03.62 to round out the track events for the day.

The field events would follow as the Cardinals added three more top 10 finishes on the day. Junior Tara Perry got things started strong, competing in the High Jump, and finishing eighth with a time of 1.56 meters. Keala McCurry would add the second top 10 finish of the field events, as she opened up her year in the Pole Vault. She started off the season strong, reaching a height of 3.30 meters, finishing ninth in the field. The final top 10 finish of the event came from the throwers as Kimora Pooler competed in the Shot Put. The junior finished 8th, throwing a distance of 12.47 meters to lead the throwers. Pooler also led the Cardinals in the weight throw, finishing 27th with a distance of 12.20 meters.

The Wheeling University Women's Track & Field team returns to action on Saturday, January 20th, when they take on the SPIRE Midwest Invite.
