Youngstown, OH. – The 2023-2024 Indoor Track & Field season kicked off on Friday at the Youngstown Ice Breaker event. It was a big day for the sprinters, as they led the way for Wheeling Men's Track & Field with two top five finishers. It was a strong event to kick things off for the Cardinals as they head into the 2023 Christmas break.
Leading the way was the lone All-American athlete from a season ago in Junior
Moses Koroma. Koroma competed in both the 60-Meter Hurdle and the 200-Meter dash and was the Cardinal's top finisher in both events. His best showing came in the 60-Meter Hurdle where he picked up one of two fourth place finishes for the team. He would take 4th in the event with a time of 8.02, finishing .04 seconds faster than his time at the NCAA DII National Championships. He then came back a few events later in the 200-Meter dash where he set a new PR with a time of 22.81 to finish 36th overall. Koroma has a breakout year for the Cardinals a season ago and looks to continue his success as the 2023-2024 season continues.
The track events would begin with the 60-Metet Dash, where transfer
Calvin Blunt made an immediate impact in his Cardinal debut. Blunt finished 4th in the field with a time of 6.99 seconds to lead the Cardinals, and
Jan Wray finished behind him in 22nd with a time of 7.21. Joining Koroma in the 200-Meter dash was Blunt, Wray, and
Charles Atwell. Blunt would finish 57th with a time of 23.25, Wray placed 67th at 23.49, and Atwell took 83rd at 24.23. The mid-distance events rounded out the day on the track as junior
Joshua Boehm competed. Boehm finished 11th in the field for the Cardinals with a time of 49.22 as he rounded out the day on the track.
In the field events, the jumpers were the only ones to compete for the Cardinals. Junior
Kabwe Bwalya competed in both of the events, the long jump and the triple jump. His top distance came in the Triple Jump, where he placed 11th with a distance of 12.85 meters, and he rounded out the day with a distance of 5.82 meters and a 24th place finish in the Long Jump.
The Wheeling University Men's Track & Field team returns to action on Saturday, January 20th, when they take on the SPIRE Midwest Invitational at 10 AM.
