Winters Knocks Down 10 Kills in Sweep Over Frostburg State

Wheeling, W. Va. – Mountain East Conference (MEC) play came to the Alma Grace McDonough Center in Friday night as Wheeling battled Frostburg State. Sophomore Mady Winters continued her got start to conference play with 10 kills in the team's 3-0 sweep. It was the Cardinals' first conference sweep of the season as Wheeling improves to 2-0 in conference play.

The Wheeling offense as a whole came to play and the Cardinals showed that right away in set one. The Cardinals scored nine of the first ten points of the set and took an early 9-1 lead. A pair of service aces for Allonda Watkins and two Winters kills highlighted the run as Wheeling was off and running. A 6-0 run later in the set got Wheeling to 21 points before the Bobcats could put five of their own up in the set. Frostburg State would continue to fight, going on a 6-2 run to get to ten points, but Wheeling would hold the set point at 24-10. Riley Kindall would close the set with a kill and Wheeling took a 1-0 lead on the match with a 25-10 set win.

Looking to bounce back in set two, Frostburg State scored the first two points of set two to take a 2-0 lead. However, Wheeling battled back to tie it up at 4-4 before they took off on another big run. This time, it was a 14-1 Cardinals tilt that turned a 4-3 Frostburg State advantage into an 18-5 Cardinals lead. Frostburg State would add four more points in the set, but once again Wheeling held set point at 24-9. The Cardinals would once again close out the set with a kill when Lexi Smith smacked it down to give Wheeling the 25-9 set two win. The Cardinals were now up 2-0 and looking for their first sweep since the start of conference play.

The third set of the night has a slightly different tune as Frostburg State got out to the early lead. They scored six of the first nine points in the set to lead 6-3 in the early going. The Cardinals were in the hole, but not for long as Wheeling out together a 6-1 run that shifted the set to a 9-7 Cardinals lead. The Bobcats would answer, scoring four straight points as the lead changes hands twice more are the halfway point of the set. Frostburg State would lead 12-11 when the Cardinals went on the run that would seal the match. Lexi Smith smacked down the kill to kick-off a 10-1 run and the Cardinals had a 21-13 lead. Wheeling got to set point at 24-15, but Frostburg State refused to go down. They scored back-to-back points to make it 24-17, but an attack error would end the night as Wheeling won the set 25-17 and took the match 3-0.

Tylah Yeomans led the offense with 13 kills while Winters added 10 kills and a team-best .668 hitting percentage. Niesen led the way with 37 assists in the night while adding four kills of her own. Riley Kindall led the way with 14 digs on defense while Yeomans added 13 digs of her own. Chylyn Pate added 11 digs to round out the Cardinals double digit Dig effort. Wheeling is now out to a 2-0 start in conference play as they once again try and claim the North Division and make it back to the MEC tournament.

The Wheeling University Volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, September 27th, with tip-off at 7 PM.
