Total Team Effort Leads Volleyball to Sweep Over Alderson Broaddus

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Volleyball team (9-6, 3-0) hosted Mountain East Conference (MEC) foe Alderson Broaddus. It was a total team effort as the Cardinals swept the Battlers 3-0 to improve to 3-0 in conference play. Every active player on the Cardinals contributed in the win, with the final two players coming in during the third set.

Set one saw the normal starting seven in the match and they were on fire throughout the set. They had a hitting percentage of .696 throughout the set and got big contributions from their front line hitters. Mady Wintersl led the way with four kills in the set while Tylah Yeomans and Riley Kindall each added three kills. The Cardinals scored 17 of the first 23 points and went on to win the set 25-7 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cardinals began to incorporate their bench players in right from the first set and they wouldn't stop throughout the night. Cameron Zinn, Berit Jones, and Aly Finch would start the second set for the Cardinals and they fit right in.

Tylah Yeomans got the second set started with four kills in the team's first eight points as Wheeling once again built a lead. Alyson Cunningham got into the match next and had a block assist and a kill that out Wheeling ahead 17-7. After extending their lead to 19-10 Cassidey Wiley and Shelby James got a run going, trading kills for three straight points to make it 22-10. The Cardinals got two more kills from Allonda Watkins, and went on to win the set 25-14 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. For the final set, Wheeling Volleyball Head Coach Christy Benner gave Cunningham and James their first set start of the season as the Cardinals looked to close the night out with a sweep.

Shelby James set a career-high with her third kill of the night to start the third set and the Cardinals took a 3-1 lead. However, the Battlers would come back and battle, tying the set at 5-5. After the Battlers took a 7-5 lead, Cameron Zinn picked up her first collegiate kill to get the ball back to Wheeling and a Cunningham kill made it an 8-7 Cardinal advantage. Sophomore Aly Finch would be next, picking up two kills as part of a 6-0 run that opened up the Cardinals advantage. Raegan Rodo checked in on the back line and helped Wheeling build a 20-13 lead. Marlies Wendler would come in next to serve and picked up a Dig while helping Wheeling to two straight points. Lindsey James would then come in and Wheeling got to set point at 24-16. Lindsey James would come through with her first career kill to give Wheeling yhe 3-0 win. 

On the offensive side, 13 different Cardinals contributed atleast one kill on the night. Mady Winters led the way with 10 kills while Tylah Yeomans added nine of her own on the night. Alyson Cunningham set a new career-high with four kills, joining Lexi Smith and Allonda Watkins at that number. Aly Finch, Riley Kindall, and Cassidey Wiley each finished with three kills and Shelby James and Karly Niesen each had two. Lindsey James rounded out the attack with her first career kill in the final plat of the day. Directing the offense was the combination of Karly Niesen and Cameron Zinn, who had 23 and 14 assists respectively. On defense, Chylyn Pate led the way with 16 digs while Marlies Wendler picked up her first Dig of the season in the win.

The Wheeling University Volleyball team returns to action on Friday, September 30th, when they travel to Notre Dame College at 7 PM.
