Women’s Basketball to Host Elite Camp for High School Players in Alma Grace McDonough Center

Wheeling, W. Va. - As the summer months wind down, things are starting to heat up at Wheeling University. Student-athletes will be back on campus in two weeks and in just over a month the 2022-2023 season will begin. Before the hustle and bustle gets started, the Wheeling University Women's Basketball team announced they will be hosting an Elite Camp inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Saturday, July 30th, beginning at 9 AM. The camp is open to athletes entering grades 9-12 as they get the opportunity to work with Wheeling University players and coaches.

Last season, the Cardinals made a run to the Mountain East Conference (MEC) tournament semifinals, where they fell to the eventual runner-up and NCAA Division II National Champions Glenville State. Junior Lauren Calhoun had a breakout season on the floor and paced the Cardinals scoring over 500 points and earning All-MEC First Team honors for her efforts. With Calhoun and several other players from last year's squad returning for the 2022-23 season, the Cardinals look to build off their success. The season also opens a new chapter for Wheeling Women's Basketball with Anna Kowalska being named the new Head Women's Basketball coach back on May 23rd.

The day will begin with registration and a free shooting period for participants from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. After registering, students will be taken on a tour of the campus and will learn about what Wheeling university has to offer them both academically and athletically. After a quick introduction of the players and coaches, it is time to get to work as the campers will go through a series of drills including skill stations and 3-on-3 play. After lunch, the participants will return for 5-on-5 play to wrap up the day where they can take what they learned and apply it to live game situations.

Kowalska is excited to welcome some strong talent on campus and to give them the opportunity to work with Wheeling players and coaches.

"We are excited to announce our July 30th Elite Camp for High School players entering grades 9-12," said Kowalska. "This is a unique opportunity for them to come to our beautiful campus and showcase their skills in front of our coaching staff. They will get a chance to work directly with our staff and players in a number of drills and live play. We are very excited about this and can't wait to see everyone here."

There is still time to sign-up for the Wheeling Women's Basketball Elite Camp up until the 30th. Registration is $80 per player and registration will be collected when you arrive. To sign-up click HERE or email Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Nicholas Kjaerholt
