Wheeling, W. Va. - As rain moves through the West Virginia Northern Panhandle, the Wheeling University Softball team has announced that this afternoon's doubleheader against West Liberty has been postponed. The games will now be played as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 27th, with first pitch at 3 & 5 PM. The two games were originally supposed to be played on April 6th, but inclement weather forced those games to be moved as well.
Inclement weather also looks to impact the weekend opener against Concord previously scheduled for Saturday, April 9th. That game will now be played on Monday, April 11th, with first pitch scheduled for 12 PM & 2 PM. This moves Wheeling's weekend opener to Sunday, April 10th, when they take on Glenville State with first pitch scheduled for 1 PM & 3 PM.
Wheeling is coming off an effort where the offense battled against Frostburg State, but just didn't have enough in the tank as they fell to Frostburg State in both games. Game one saw them fall 7-4 after scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning as they looked to keep that momentum going into game two. That would not happen as Wheeling was eight-run ruled in five innings as they fell in that game 12-1. They dropped to 2-10 in conference play, but now get a chance to return home for the first time since mid-March.
Despite the losses, the Cardinals saw an individual milestone come to fruition courtesy of sophomore Makie Paxson. Paxson stepped up to lead off the top of the seventh in game one and lifted the first home run of her collegiate career to start that three-run top of the seventh. She went 1-2 in that game and added a 0-0 effort in game two as the starting center fielder. In that second game, Mia Smallwood would hit her first home run of the season accounting for Wheeling's lone run of the game.
The Wheeling University Softball team now returns to action on Sunday, April 10th, when they take on Glenville State with first pitch scheduled for 1 PM & 3 PM.
