Baseball’s Weekend Set With Fairmont Pushed Back a Day

Wheeling, W. Va. – It has been a rainy week so far in West Virginia as the Wheeling University Baseball team (11-16, 7-5) announced changes to their upcoming schedule. Both of the team's doubleheaders against Fairmont State have been pushed back a day, with the series opener being played on Sunday, April 10th, at 1 & 3 PM and the following doubleheader will be played on Monday, April 12th, at 1 & 3 PM.

The Cardinals are entering Mountain East Conference (MEC) North Division Play for the first time this season, as the next five weekends will feature four-game series against each of Wheeling's MEC North Division opponents. They opened the year against the MEC South, with 12 games against the six teams and went 7-5 in those contests. In their most recent weekend, Wheeling went 1-3 against The University of Charleston and West Virginia State, with the line win coming in the final game against the Yellow Jackets. The Cardinals got a strong pitching performance on the mound to lead the way that day as they salvaged the weekend with a 3-1 win.

Leading the way on the mound for Wheeling that day was left-hander Hayden Scudder, who has been on fire as of late. Over his last two starts, Scudder has combined to throw 11 innings of work without allowing an earned run. He has struck out nine batters during that stretch and the one run that he did allow was an unearned run. In both of those games, Scudder's command on the mound was electric and he had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning in both outings. With Wheeling looking for some consistency on the mound, Scudder has been a welcome presence in the rotation and looks to continue that success through the rest of the season.

On the offensive side of the ball, sophomore J.R. Heavilin has broken out in his sophomore season and has a team-high .402 batting average in 27 games. He has been extremely hot over his last six games, hitting .421 (8-19) with a pair of home runs and nine RBI. He is second on the team in home runs with five and sits tied for the team lead with 29 RBI this season. He has been a welcome presence in the middle of the Cardinals lineup and looks to continue to bring the wood.

The Wheeling University Baseball team will now open their four-game set with Fairmont State on the road on Sunday (4-10) with first pitch at 1 PM.
