Rain Washes Away Series Finale with Frostburg State

Wheeling, W. Va. - After taking on Frostburg State in doubleheader action on Friday, the rains fell down this weekend forcing the Wheeling University Baseball team's (12-22, 8-10) Saturday doubleheader to be postponed. The games will be made up at a date/location to be announced later. This closes out the team's weekend set as Wheeling drops both of their games against the Mountain East Conference (MEC) North Division Leading Bobcats.

It was an action packed day on Friday with the first of the two games coming down to the final inning of play. The Cardinals entered the top of the 7th leading 6-4 and turned to their bullpen. However, the Bobcats put up a five-spot in the inning to take a 9-6 lead and force Wheeling to fight to keep the game alive. The Cardinals would load the bases with one out and were able to push two runs across, but it wasn't enough as they ended up falling 9-8. Game two saw Frostburg State jump out to a seven-run lead early before Garth Charlton led the charge on a two-run bottom of the fourth. However, that is all the offense Wheeling could muster as they fell 13-2 to drop the second game.

Despite the two losses, Wheeling had their offense working throughout the afternoon with a couple of key players having big days. In game one, sophomore J.R. Heavilin led the way going 2-3 with two RBI and a double in the game. Heavilin has been having a strong sophomore campaign, leading the team with a .407 batting average. In game two, Garth Charlton led the way with the only RBI of the game as Wheeling fell 13-2. Charlton has routinely been in the second game of doubleheader and has made the most of his opportunities hitting .300 this season.

The Wheeling University Baseball team will return to action on Tuesday, April 19th, when they go on the road to face Seton Hill.
