SOFTBALL BACK ON THE ROAD FOR TWO WEEKEND SERIES

Wheeling, W.Va - The Wheeling University Softball team (9-22, 2-14) took to the road for four games this week, battling against Glenville State College and Concord University. Heading into the weekend, the Cardinals will once again be traveling to play four games in two days. Friday is a doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan College at 12PM and 2PM, while Saturday will post the same game times but against Davis & Elkins.

The first matchup on Tuesday afternoon saw the Cardinals fall to Glenville State 8-2. Two Cardinals stood out during the game as both Alisa Shelt and Natalie Stoner were able to put runs on the board. Shelt hit a double to bring Stoner around to home plate in the fifth inning. Brooke Webber then singled to right field bringing Shelt home in the same inning. Overall, the Cardinals held sturdy defensively but tough innings in the first and third led to seven of Glenville's eight runs. The second game was tight throughout the first five innings as the score was deadlocked 1-1 after both teams scored in the first inning. Makie Paxson was Wheeling's lone scorer of the game as she was helped by a single from Jamie Anderson. In the sixth and seventh inning, Glenville scored a total of three runs, bringing the final score to 4-1.

On Wednesday, Wheeling battled against Concord University, where they fell in the first matchup 12-7. Five of the seven runs scored came in the fourth inning. Kelsi Green, Gina Fogle, Autum Oehlstrom, and Paxson touched home plate during the inning. The following inning saw Oehlstrom score again as she homered to left field. The final run for the Cardinals was scored by Fogle. Cardinals' pitcher Aubrie Lafferty threw four strikeouts in the game. The second game did not see Wheeling score as many runs as the final score was 9-1. The lone run of the evening came from Taylor Hradek who scored off a double from Paxson.

Now on the backend of the season, wins within the Mountain East Conference (MEC) are an upmost importance. Sitting at just nine wins this season, the Cardinals will need to have a big weekend to boost their standings within the North Division. Currently Wheeling sits in sixth place with 16 games left. With the top three teams in each division making the MEC playoffs, May 6th through the 8th, the Cardinals still have some work to do if they want to battle their way back into the playoff picture in 2022.

The Matchup:

West Virginia Wesleyan College: The Cardinals and Bobcats will meet for the 18th time in program history. As of now West Virginia Wesleyan leads the series 15-3. The Bobcats have never lost to Wheeling as the home team. The Cardinals look to change that record come this weekend. The last time the two played was in April of 2021 when West Virginia Wesleyan won 9-1. Hradek was the lone scorer of the game.

Davis & Elkins: Wheeling University and the Senators of Elkins, West Virginia have faced off 6 times in program history. Currently, Davis & Elkins holds a 5-1 record over the Cardinals. The last time the two teams met was in April of 2021 when Davis & Elkins won 10-3. Oehlstrom, Anna Florczak and Fogle were all able to score. Wheeling looks to capture their second and third win against Davis & Elkins Saturday.
