Wheeling, W. Va. - On Monday, the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) released their weekly Men's Lacrosse awards. Wheeling Men's Lacrosse player
Joshua Wolford earned the GMAC's Defensive Player of the Week award for his work in net. Wolford helped his team pick up their first home win since the 2018 season, including making the save that saved the game in the waning seconds of the overtime period.
Wolford made his sixth start of the season on Saturday and earned his first collegiate win with the effort. He allowed seven goals in the game, but came through big on the defensive end with 15 saves. He faced a total of 22 shots on the night and made the save on over half of those attempts. Without the work of Wolford, the Cardinals would not have been able to pick up the win. Of the 15 saves he made on the day, 11 of those came in the second half of the game, including six saves in the fourth quarter. However, his biggest save of the afternoon came with just over a minute showing on the overtime clock.
After Wheeling had a scoring attempt thwarted to start the OT period, Felician had the ball on the offensive end. There first few shots went wide of the net, but Liam Dunn got the rebound and was set for a shot with 1:17 to go on the game clock. He had a shot on the left post and took it with a chance to send his team home the winners. Wolford was able to slide over and get his stick in front of the ball and make the save. He then sent the pass quickly to his offense and
Jacob Knippel took the shot top right corner to give his team their first home win since 2018.
Wolford is the first member of the Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team to be honored and the 22nd Wheeling University Student-Athlete to earn Player of the Week honors. The last winners of the award were Wheeling Softball's Gina Fogle and Aubrie Lafferty when they won the Mountain East Conference (MEC)'s Softball Player and Hitter of the Week. It was a big weekend for the Wheeling Men's LAcrosse program and this is the icing on the cake.
The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team returns to action on Sunday, March 13th, when they battle St. Thomas University with face-off at noon.
