Bridgeport, W. Va. - Late Tuesday night, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced their annual postseason awards at the conclusion of the 2022 MEC Spring Classic. The Wheeling University Men's Golf team had one honoree as sophomore Yadhu Urs was named to the All-MEC First team for his efforts this season. It is the first time that Urs has won an All-MEC award in his collegiate career after consistently being one of the best golfers on the team throughout the season.
Urs was the lone Cardinal to make the finals of the MEC Championships during the fall season and finished the tournament tied for ninth and was the only Cardinals player to crack the top 30 at the event. It was a strong showing for the sophomore right from the get-go as he put up an 80 in the first round of competition. However, he just kept getting better from there, putting up scores of 73 and 78 to round out the event. That 73 in round two was his best mark of the event and was enough to move him on to day three of competition as he shot just one over par for the course.
Urs had a strong sophomore campaign, averaging a 75.3 single round score, setting one of the best marks in the conference. In his 10 rounds of competition this season he shot an 80 or better in every single round and shot 80 just twice all season. His best performance of the year came in the season opener at the Vulcan Invitational. He shot his only under-par performance of the year in the second round of the event, putting up a 67 to finish five under par for the course. He finished tied for ninth in the field in that tournament and it started what ended up being a highly successful season for the sophomore.
With the award, Urs becomes the 25th Wheeling University student-athlete to take home All-MEC honors this season. After just missing out on earning All-Conference honors during his first season, Urs came back strong this sophomore campaign and established himself as a leader for the team. He looks to take those successes and build off them as the team heads into their final event of the spring on Monday.
The Wheeling University Men's Golf team will be back in action on Monday, April 4th, when they head to the Oglebay invitational with tee-off scheduled for around 1 PM.
