Baseball/Softball Both Have Weekend Schedule Changes

Wheeling, W. Va. – It is a busy weekend for Wheeling University Athletics with seven teams in action. Due to weather systems both locally and in Kentucky, two of those teams have schedule changes for the upcoming weekend. First, the Softball team's 10 AM game against the University of Southern Indiana on Friday has been postponed and their game against Ashland has been rescheduled from 12 pm to 2 pm. Second, the Wheeling University Baseball team's Saturday game against the California University of Pennsylvania has been postponed.

The Wheeling softball team has been off for the last week and is heading to Owensboro, Kentucky where they were supposed to play six games in three days, but now will play five games in that timespan barring any other changes. They opened their season with a big sweep of Salem University that saw Wheeling score a combined 15 runs in the two games. They ended up sweeping the Mountain East Conference's (MEC) weekly softball awards with Gina Fogle winning Player of the Week and Aubrie Lafferty won the Pitcher of the Week. Fogle managed a .500 batting average in the two games with a home run and three RBI as she started her season off with a bang. Lafferty was the star of game two as she allowed just one hit over six innings of work and picked up her first shutout of the season.

As for the Wheeling Baseball team, they opened their three-game series with Cal-U on Wednesday in a game where they fell 14-1. Junior catcher Riley Cameron provided the team's only offense with a solo home run to left in the top of the third. Other than that, the Cardinals pounded out eight hits but couldn't bring a runner to the plate. Logan Pillars got the start and took his first loss of the season. Reliever Dan Matos had the strongest performance on the mound, pitching the final two innings of the game. He allowed just one hit and walked two batters to finish out the game strong for Wheeling. The team also had a few first as Spenser Craig reached base for the first time in his collegiate career and Donovan Dubuisson picked up his first collegiate hit in the loss.

The Wheeling Softball team will return to action on Friday when they take on Ashland University at 2 PM in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Wheeling Baseball team takes the field again on Sunday, February 27th, for game two of their three-game series with California University of Pennsylvania.
