heeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (4-5, 4-3) lost their four-game winning streak last time out when they fell to Notre Dame College. They return to their home field on Sunday when they host West Virginia State at 2 PM, as they try to begin a new streak in front of their home crowd. The Cardinals were held off the board for the first time since September 10th and look to get their potent offense going again this weekend.
Their Wednesday meeting with Notre Dame College was a rematch of earlier in the year when trh Cardinals took a 3-2 victory from the Flacons on the road. Much like that first meeting of the year, Notre Dame took the early lead with two first half goals that put Wheeling behind 2-0. However, the Cardinals were looking for similar fight that they showed in the first game as they tried to battle back. In the second half, the Cardinals had the upper hand, outshooting the Falcons 11-10, but unfortunately were unable to find the net. Notre Dame College would sneak in one more goal in the second half and went on to win the game 3-0. For Wheeling, it was a split of the season series with the Falcons and ended a four-game winning streak.
However, despite the loss, it was a historic day for Wheeling Women's soccer fifth-year senior
Mikayla Yarwood. After chasing the career saves record all season long, she was finally able to reach the mark with seven saves on nine shots faced throughout the night. She now stands alone atop the all-time saves leaders in program history, with 220 in her career, as she continues to be solid in net. In nine games played this season, Yarwood has 61 saves and a .726 save percentage in 810 minutes played in net. She has only allowed more than three goals in a game twice this season and has two shutouts under her belt. She looks to continue her success this week as she and her team look to get back in the win column.
On the offensive side of the ball, it was the first time that the Cardinals have been held off the board since September 10th against Frostburg State.
Mary DiFonzo has been the Cardinal's offensive leader as of late and currently sits second on the team with three goals this season. All three of those have come in the last three games, including her first career game-winning goal against Alderson Broaddus.
Kenadee Burgoyne has been the team leader this season with four goals and the duo looks to get Wheeling back on the board and in the back of the net in their first meeting with West Virginia State this season.
Despite the loss, Wheeling maintains their second place standing in the MEC North Division, sitting a game above third-place Fairmont State. With the top four teams in each division making the tournament this season, the Cardinals look to maintain their standing as they continue through the season. The Cardinals still have games remaining against division leading Frostburg State, as well as Fairmont State in the final four weeks of the season and they look to maintain their spot as one of the eight playoff teams this season.
