Wheeling, W. Va. – Entering play on Wednesday night, the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (2-3, 1-2) was 0-16 against Notre Dame College dating back to the 2005 season. They ended that 16-game losing streak tonight as they scored a come from behind 3-2 win at Bishop Schmitt Field.
Both teams got on the board twice in the first 17 minutes of the game with Notre Dame scoring first and Wheeling responded each time. It remained 2-2 for the next 58 minutes of the game as the ball bounced back and forth between the team's offensive zones. Then, Wheeling got the break they needed in the 76
th minute when they were rewarded with a corner kick from the far corner of the endzone.
Senior
Lainey Brown took the corner kick and sent the ball to senior
Kenadee Burgoyne, who already had two goals on the day, in front of the net. The ball bounced off her body and went back towards the middle of the field. Waiting for it was freshman
Talynn DeBartolo, who took her shot and sailed it over the Notre Dame Goalkeepers head and into the back of the net to give the Cardinals their first lead of the night. It was the first career goal for DeBartolo and it couldn't have come at a better time.
Wheeling would hold on for the final 14 minutes of the game and earned their first-ever win against Notre Dame College. It was their first MEC win since they defeated Frostburg State last spring, and is a big confidence boost for the team moving forward. Burgoyne was the aggressor in the game early on, and DeBartolo wrapped up the exciting night with Country Roads playing in the background.
Burgoyne's two scores came early in the game, the first coming in the first 10 minutes. Her first came on a pass from
Shiann Thomas in the seventh minute to tie the game up at one, and she followed it up with an unassisted goal in the 17
th minute. She now has five goals on the season and is one of the top goal scorers not only got the Cardinals but in the entire MEC.
Senior
Mikayla Yarwood got the start in net, and after allowing the two early goals, kept the Falcons off the board for the final 72 minutes of the game. She made eight saves on 11 shots on net and earned her second win of the season. Wheeling drastically outshot Notre Dame 16-6, and that big advantage finally paid off with their first conference win of the 2021 season.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team is back in action on Sunday when they go on the road to face Alderson Broaddus at 1 PM.
