Philippi, W. Va. – It took 93 minutes on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Philippi, West Virginia, but the Wheeling University Women's Soccer team scored their second win of the season.
Braedynn Porter notched the game-winning goal in the 93
rd minute, her third goal of the season, to lift Wheeling to victory.
After finishing regulation in a 2-2 tie, Wheeling got called for offsides to starter the overtime period. Alderson Broaddus took advantage taking the first shot of the overtime, period but fortunately for Wheeling the shot went wide right. In the ensuing possession, Wheeling drove the ball downfield into their own offensive zone. Senior
Braedynn Porter got the ball and took a shot, finding the net for her third goal of the season. It gave the Cardinals their second straight conference win and moved them to 2-2 in MEC play.
The Cardinals were the ones to get the scoring started, getting on the board in the first 20 minutes of the game. Their leading scorer,
Kenadee Burgoyne took a pass from Porter in the 17
th minute. Burgoyne was able to put it in the back of the net, and the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead. The score would remain 1-0 for a majority of the first half, with Wheeling looking for the goal to give them some security. They would find that goal in the 43
rd minute when
Rilei Levesque took the ball upfield and found the net for her first goal of the season to make it 2-0.
That was the halftime score, as Wheeling showed dominance on the offensive side of the ball. The Cardinals outshot Alderson Broaddus 7-2 in that first half and put four of those shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Mikayla Yarwood didn't have to face much traffic in her zone and was able to block the two shots she did face in the half and kept the Battlers off the board. However, Alderson Broaddus was not ready to roll over and let Wheeling win, and came back in the second half.
The script was almost flipped in the second half as Alderson Broaddus outshot Wheeling 7-1 in the second half. It took the Battlers 11 minutes to get on the board in the second half. Diana Forero took a pass from Alderson Broaddus's Morgan Griffith and found the net to bring the score 2-1. Wheeling held their one-point lead for most of the half, with Yarwood making three big saves to keep it 2-1. However, Alderson Broaddus would tie the game with eight minutes left on the clock. Forero took another pass, this time from Alexis McKeown, and tied the game at 2-2. Wheeling would head to overtime for the first time this season and pulled off the victory.
Burgoyne led the offense once again taking four shots and putting two of those shots on goal. Porter added two shots, putting both on goal, and
Talynn DeBartolo added two more shots on the day. Yarwood played good defense making three saves on five shots on goal to earn her third win of the season. The win evens up Wheeling's conference record and gets some momentum on their side as they head into a rivalry game this week.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday when they go on the road to face West Liberty at 4 PM.
