Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team (1-3, 0-2) battled Frostburg State on Sunday afternoon, but ended up falling 2-1. After Wheeling tied the game in the second half, it was a goal in the 56th minute that put the Cardinals behind, and they were never able to recover in the loss.
After the teams went back and forth throughout the first half, it was Frostburg State that opened the scoring when they got on the board in the 36th minute. The Bobcats Lela Clark took a pass from the near side and found the back of the net to get the Bobcats on the board. Wheeling's Shiann Thomas got a shot off in the 43rd minute looking to tie the game, but the save was made and the Bobcats went into halftime leading 1-0.
In that first half, Frostburg controlled the ball and outshot Wheeling 10-6, but the shots they did take weren't very accurate. Mikayla Yarwood got the start in net and of those 10 shots, only three of them went on goal. Wheeling took six shots in that first half and put five of those shots on goal. Wheeling was looking to get a quick strike in the second half as they tried to get back into the game.
They would get that quick strike they were looking for in the 50th when Wheeling got a breakaway opportunity. Mary DiFonzo got the ball and made a move to get past the Frostburg goalkeeper at the 10-yard line. With an open net in front of her, DiFonzo took the shot off the left corner of the net and put the Cardinals on the board. It was DiFonzo's first goal of the season and it gave the Cardinals a much-needed boost.
With the game tied at 1-1, both teams continued to battle back and forth looking for the upper hand. Frostburg almost got that advantage in the 54th minute, but Yarwood made the save and kept it 1-1. However, two minutes later, Frostburg would break through as Lela Clark found the net and gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead. This would be all the offense the two teams would be able to muster in the game and they ended up dropping the contest 2-1.
Kenadee Burgoyne once again led the Wheeling offense, taking five shots and putting four of those shots on net. Braedynn Porter and Landree Wilkin each added two shots on the day for the offense. Yarwood made seven saves on the afternoon, allowing just two goals on nine shots for a save percentage of .777.
The Wheeling University Women's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday night when they host Notre Dame College at 7 PM at Bishop Schmitt Field.
