WHEELING, W.Va. (April 17) – The Wheeling University softball team was defeated twice by West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader at the JB Chambers Complex.
The Cardinals (9-22, 6-12 MEC) were limited to three hits by the Bobcarts (9-8, 9-8 MEC) in a 6-1 game one defeat and again in a 9-1 loss in game two.
West Virginia Wesleyan raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and eventually took a 6-0 lead through six innings.
Wheeling got on the board in the seventh inning when junior first baseman
Gina Fogle (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) sent a ball over the center field fence for her first home run of the season.
The Bobcats scored three times in the first inning of game two to jump out to an early lead again.
Wheeling got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI base-hit by freshman
Katie Sare (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) that made the score 3-1.
West Virginia Wesleyan got the run back in the second and added three more in fourth and two un the fifth to secure the run-rule win.
Sare led the team in game two with two hits and a RBI.
Wheeling will look to bounce back tomorrow, Sunday, April 18 when it hosts Davis & Elkins at the JB Chambers Complex around 12 p.m.
