Wheeling swept by Davis & Elkins

WHEELING, W.Va. (April 18) – The Wheeling University softball team dropped a pair of games to Davis & Elkins in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the JB Chambers Complex.

The Cardinals (9-25, 6-16 MEC) trailed the Senators (9-13, 9-13 MEC) 4-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Cassi Roman (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) connected on a three-run home run to make the score 4-3.

Unfortunately, Wheeling was retired in order in the seventh to allow D&E to claim game one.

Junior Heather Pinney (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) and redshirt-freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) each posted two hits in the loss.

Freshman pitcher Aubrie Lafferty (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln) fell to 1-5 on the season after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

Game two headed into the fourth inning scoreless. Davis & Elkins got on the board with a solo home run, before the Cardinals answered with a run of their own to tie the game.

The Senators reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run and used a three-run home run in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead. Davis & Elkins tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Roman, Oehlstrom and redshirt-freshman Alisa Shelt (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) each had two hits for the Cardinals who had 10 as a team.

The Cardinals will look to get back on track on Wednesday, April 21 when they travel up the hill to West Liberty for a MEC doubleheader at 3 p.m.
