Wheeling dealt 19-11 loss at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. (April 17) – The Wheeling University men's lacrosse team was handed a 19-11 loss at Davis & Elkins in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest Saturday evening.
 
The loss drops the Cardinals to 1-8 overall, 0-4 in Great Midwest play. Meanwhile, the Senators improve to 2-4 on the season with both wins over Wheeling, 1-4 in conference play.
 
Freshman Brody Fawver (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) led the Cardinals with a season-high five goals. He also tallied two assists to finish with seven points on the evening.
 
Freshmen Mike Andersson (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) and Jake Wodarek (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) each added two goals and an assist, while classmate Jacob Knippel (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) chipped in a goal and two assists.
 
Wodarek scored the first goal of the game to give Wheeling the edge five minutes into the contest. Davis & Elkins answered back with three-straight goals, before a goal by Fawver to open the second quarter brought the score to 3-2.
 
Each team traded goals over the next five minutes to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Senators. D&E scored three-straight goals within a minute to establish a four-goal advantage, but a marker by Andersson put the score a 8-5 heading into halftime.
 
The Cardinals closed the gap to 9-7 with 10:40 to play in the third quarter, but a pair of man-up goals by the Senators pushed the advantage back to 12-7.
 
Goals by Fawver and Knippel had the Cardinals back within striking distance at 12-9 with 1:46 left in the third quarter, before a run of seven-straight goals by D&E put the contest away.
 
Davis & Elkins out-shot Wheeling 53 to 35, including a 35 to 19 advantage in shots on-goal. 
 
The Senators converted 5-of-11 extra-man opportunities, compared to the 1-for-5 effort by the Cardinals.

The 11 goals scored was the most in a game this season by the Cardinals.
 
Wheeling returns to Bishop Schmitt Field on Saturday, April 24 for its home finale when it welcomes Walsh for a Great Midwest contest around 12 p.m.
