Cardinals split with Salem; DeRossett earns first-career win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 4) – The Wheeling University softball opened the season with a 14-3 run-rule win, before falling on a walk-off home run in the second game to earn a split against Salem in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • The Cardinals opened up a 6-0 lead through the top of the third inning.
  • Salem managed to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom half of the third.
  • After extending the lead to 7-3 in the fourth, the Cardinals put the game away with a huge seven-run fifth inning.
  • Wheeling connected on seven singles and plated seven runs with the help of one error to establish the 14-3 lead.
  • Sophomore pitcher Madison Macy (Metamora, Mich./Lutheran Northwest) retired the Tigers in order in the fifth to preserve the run-rule win.
GAME NOTES
  • Macy earned the win in game one after entering in the third inning. She allowed zero runs on four hits over three innings of work.
  • Sophomore Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry) had two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Freshman Anna Florczak (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) drove in three RBIs.
  • Freshman Cassi Roman (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) led the team at the dish with three hits.
  • The victory was the debut and first-career head coaching win for new Head Coach Caressa DeRossett.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • The Cardinals erased a 6-2 deficit in game two, only to be defeated by a walk-off home run in the seventh inning of game two at Mylan Park.
  • Roman got the seventh inning going with a two-run home run to make the score 6-4.
  • After Hradek drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, redshirt-freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) smacked a two-run home run of her own to give Wheeling a 7-6 lead.
  • Salem got a single and a home run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win and earn a split with Wheeling.
GAME NOTES
  • Roman led the Cardinals with a home run and three RBIs in the loss.
  • Junior Heather Pinney (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) finished with two hits and a run scored.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals return home to Lisa's Field at the I-470 Complex on Sunday, March 7 for a non-conference twin-bill against Seton Hill beginning at 12 p.m.
