WHEELING, W.Va. (March 22) - The Wheeling University men's lacrosse team was bested by No. 3 Mercyhurst 21-2 Monday afternoon in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Freshman Mike Andersson (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) scored both of the Cardinal goals in the fourth quarter.
  • Freshman Jacob Knippel (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) assisted on both of Andersson's goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst quickly asserted itself with eight-unanswered goals in the first period.
  • The Lakers tallied seven more in the second period to take a commanding 15-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Cardinals got on to the board in the fourth quarter when Knippel found Andersson in front of the net for a man-up goal.
  • Andersson found the back of the net again in the final two minutes of the match off of another Knippel dime to make the score 21-2.
GAME NOTES
  • Mercyhurst was ranked No. 3 in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Top-25 poll.
  • The Lakers held a 33-to-7 advantage in shots-on-goal.
