Wheeling knocked off twice at Notre Dame

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (March 22) – The Wheeling University softball team was dealt a pair of losses by Notre Dame (Ohio) in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play Sunday afternoon.

  • GAME 1 FINAL: Notre Dame 8, Wheeling 3
  • GAME 2 FINAL: Notre Dame 9, Wheeling 1(F/5)

  • Records: Wheeling 3-9 | Notre Dame 6-6
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • Wheeling loaded the bases in the second inning, but were unable to push anyone across.
  • The Cardinals eventually fell into a 5-0 hole through three innings.
  • Wheeling got on the board in the fourth inning with the help of a pair of hits, including a two-RBI single by sophomore Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry).
  • Freshman Reagan Smith (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) inched Wheeling closer with a RBI-double (ground rule) that made the score 5-3 in the fifth inning.
  • Notre Dame rebuilt its lead to five, 8-3, and limited the Cards to one hit over the final two frames to secure the win.
GAME NOTES
  • Redshirt-freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) went 3-for-4 in the game.
  • Smith and freshman Cassi Roman (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) each finished with two hits, including a double apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • Notre Dame completed the two-game sweep with a 9-1 run-rule win in the nightcap.
  • The Falcons opened up a 7-0 lead through three innings.
  • Wheeling got on the board in the fourth on a pair of hits, including an RBI from Smith.
  • Notre Dame kept the Cards off of the board in the fifth inning and plated a pair of runs in the bottom half to trigger the run-rule and end the game at 9-1.
GAME NOTE
  • Oehlstrom added two more hits in the second game to finish with five total on the day.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals will travel to Vienna, West Virginia for a non-conference doubleheader at Ohio Valley on Wednesday, March 24 around 3 p.m.
