Cards fall twice to West Virginia State

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 26) – The Wheeling University softball team dropped two games to West Virginia State in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 1
  • The Yellow Jackets scored three times to open up a lead in the second inning. 
  • The first two runners reached for the Cardinals in the third inning, before redshirt-freshman Autumn Oehlstrom (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) hit an opposite-field home run to left to tie the game up at 3-3.
  • West Virginia State took the lead back in the fifth with a run and opened the game up with a four-run sixth to establish an 8-3 lead.
  • Wheeling sophomore Gina Fogle (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) drove home a run in the seventh, but a trio of fly ball outs ended the game.
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomores Taylor Hradek (Perry, Ohio/Perry) and Hadley Bennett (Warren, Utah/Fremont) each had two hits.
  • Freshman Jamie Anderson (Toronto, Ohio/Toronto) went the distance in the circle. She allowed eight runs (six earned) on nine hits with a trio of strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED in Game 2
  • The Cardinals were unable to dig out of a 9-1 hole in the game two loss.
  • Oehlstrom led the Cardinals at the plate with her second home run of the day.
  • Hradek posted two hits, including a double, and a RBI.
  • Fogle and redshirt-freshman Alisa Shelt (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) each had two hits. Fogle had a double and a run scored.
  • Both teams had 12 hits in the game.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals have made a schedule change for Saturday, March 27.
  • Wheeling will now host Frostburg State instead of Charleston.
  • First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.
