Wheeling defeats Alderson Broaddus, 3-1

PHILLIPI, W.Va. (March 2) – Behind a season-high 21 kills by junior Kayla Bekier (Northwood, Ohio/Lake), the No. 15 Wheeling University volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over Alderson Broaddus Tuesday night.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Bekier finished with 21 kills on 50 attacks (.220 hitting percentage).
  • Junior Lexi Smith (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) also established a season-high with 14 kills on 28 attacks with two errors (.429).
  • Junior Lexi Reinert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) also recorded double-digit kills with 10 on 28 attacks with one error (.321).
  • Freshman setter Karly Niesen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) was one off of her season high in assists with 54 on the evening.
  • Senior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) guided the defense with 25 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals dominated the first set. Wheeling hit .545 with 19 kills and one error, while limiting the Battlers to just five kills on 32 attacks (.094).
  • AB jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second set and never looked back. The Cardinals managed to get the score to 19-17, but a 6-2 run to close out the set allowed the Battlers to pick up the set win.
  • The Cardinals responded with a third set win in which they led wire to wire. AB got the score to 16-12, but a 6-1 run elevated Wheeling to a 22-13 lead that helped it earn the win.
  • Wheeling held a 12-10 advantage in the fourth set when it rolled off five-straight points. AB managed to make the score 22-20, before the Cards ended the night with three of the next four points to earn the win.

  • The Cardinals will close out the regular-season on Friday, March 5 at West Liberty around 7 p.m.
