Wheeling snaps skid with clean sheet against Frostburg State, 2-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 19) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team snapped its losing skid with an impressive 2-0 win against previously-unbeaten Frostburg State Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling kept the game scoreless early on thanks to saves by freshman goalkeeper Jaci Wilson (Rootstown, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas).
  • Frostburg had its best chance to score in the 17th-minute, but a sliding save by Wilson kept the Bobcats off of the score sheet.
  • The Cardinals took the lead into halftime when senior Paige Orbell (Severn, Md./Old Mill) tapped a corner kick into an empty net to make the score 1-0.
  • Wheeling added an insurance marker in the 63rd-minute on a long ball played into the box. Junior Braedynn Porter (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) collected the loose ball and buried it into an empty net to make the score 2-0.
  • Frostburg State had another premium scoring opportunity in the 81st-minute, but Wilson once again stood tall and maintained the shutout.
MATCH NOTES
  • Wilson was phenomenal for the Cardinals in net. She finished with nine saves and posted her first-career clean sheet.
  • Frostburg State out-shot Wheeling 18-to-8 for the match.
  • The win snapped a 22-match losing-streak for the Cardinals that dated back to a 4-1 win over Urbana on October 18, 2018.
