Wheeling falls short to Davis & Elkins, 16-9

WHEELING, W.Va. (March 13) - The Wheeling University men's lacrosse team was unable to dig out of an early hole in a 16-9 loss to Davis & Elkins Saturday night in a non-conference game at Bishop Schmitt Field.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Freshmen Jacob Knippel (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) and Mike Andersson (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) each scored four times, with Andersson adding one assist.
  • Freshman goalie Christian Nestor (Wheeling, W.Va./Park) made his collegiate-debut and stopped five shots in relief.
  • Freshman Joey Bertrand (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) won 21 of 25 faceoffs and led Wheeling with 12 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game was even at 1-1 four minutes into the match, when the Senators scored 10-straight goals to take an 11-1 lead with 3:26 left until halftime.
  • Wheeling surged back into the contest with three goals to close out the first half to make the score 11-4, and two more to start the second half that made the score 11-6.
  • The two squads traded goals down the stretch and the Senators made enough plays to maintain the lead and hold on for the win.
GAME NOTES
  • Both teams are members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, but the game was not the "official" league meeting between the two squads and does not count towards the conference standings.
  • Davis & Elkins converted 5-of-8 man-up opportunities.

  • The Cardinals will enter Great Midwest play next Monday, March 22 when they welcome perennial-power Mercyhurst to Bishop Schmitt Field for a 3 p.m. match.
