Late goals deal Wheeling 2-1 loss at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (March 12) - The Wheeling University men's soccer team fell to rival West Liberty 2-1 Friday night after allowing the deciding goal with seven seconds left in the second overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wheeling struck first with a goal from Cesar Coello (Zaragoza, Spain/Aleman Zaragoza) on a free-kick 20th-minute in the first half.
  • West Liberty tied the match at 1-1 in the 81st-minute to create the overtime period. 
  • Both teams were limited in the first overtime offensively, as West Liberty attempted the only shot of the period.
  • With the second overtime clock running down, West Liberty found the back of the net from a corner kick with just seven seconds left on the game clock to notch its first win of the 2021 spring season. 

MATCH NOTES

  • Senior Goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) made five saves in the match.
  • A total of 13 bookings were made, including a red card that caused Wheeling to play a man down for the final 55 minutes of the match.
