Wheeling rallies past Cal U, 9-8

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 26) – The Wheeling University baseball team scored a run in the ninth inning to secure a 9-8 win over Cal U Monday afternoon in the series finale at Wild Things Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got on the board first in the second inning when junior Blake Vandiver (Alton, Ill./Roxana) singled back up the middle to plate two runs.
  • Cal U tied the game up in the bottom half, but a sacrifice fly by sophomore Lucas Rawlins (Pickerington, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) gave the Wheeling the lead right back in the third inning.
  • The Vulcans answered back again, this time with two runs to put the Cardinals down 4-3.
  • Wheeling posted a four-run frame in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead.
  • The Cardinals collected three hits to go with four walks in the big inning. The big at-bat came from senior Bryen Kimbrough's (Southhampton, Pa./Pennsbury) two-out, two-RBI single.
  • Cal U battled back to take the lead once again and eventually the game headed into the ninth inning tied at 8-8.
  • Wheeling got a one-out single from Rawlins and proceeded to draw three-straight walks to push the go-ahead run across.
  • Senior closer Albert Baez (Fort Worth, Texas/Timber Creek) came on in the bottom of the ninth and retired the Vulcans in order to clinch the victory in the series finale.
GAME NOTES
  • Senior pitcher Nick Luciano (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. He yielded just one hit and struck out five.
  • Vandiver led the Cardinals at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs and two walks.
  • Rawlins and Kimbrough each drove home two runs in the win.
  • Sophomore starting pitcher Hayden Wilcox (Victoria, British Columbia/Lambrick Park) earned a no-decision after allowing four runs on four hits with a trio of strikeouts over four innings of work.
UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Nutter Fort, West Virginia for a trio of neutral-site games at Salem University's home field this weekend.
  • Wheeling will play a non-conference game against Concord on Friday, March 5 at 2 p.m.
  • The Cardinals will then play a double-header on Saturday against regional-power Mercyhurst at 3 p.m.
