Wheeling falls to Cal U, 7-1

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 26) – The Wheeling University baseball team was unable to hold on to its early lead and was dealt a 7-1 loss by Cal U Saturday afternoon at Wild Things Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the third inning when sophomore Riley Cameron (Vass, N.C./Union Pines) singled to score junior Connor Watt (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Vulcans claimed the lead in the fourth with three runs on three hits to make the score 3-1.
  • Cal U added to its lead in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game.
  • Wheeling drew a pair of walks to lead off the sixth and loaded the bases with a third base on balls, but were unable to push anyone across.
  • The Vulcans tacked on two more in the eighth to bring the contest to its final score of 7-1.
GAME NOTES
  • Cameron led the team at the plate with two hits, including a double, and a RBI.
  • Junior pitcher Cameron Madden (Cincinnati, Ohio/Badin) made the start and was saddled with the loss. He went 3.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits with a trio of strikeouts.

  • Due to the projected forecast, the Cardinals and Vulcans will conclude their opening weekend series on Monday, February 29.
