Baseball Cards drop season-opener at Cal U

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 26) – The Wheeling University baseball team dropped a 12-1 game in its season-opener against California University of Pennsylvania Friday afternoon at Wild Things Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Vulcans took a 2-0 lead in the third inning with the help of a trio of walks.
  • The score remained the same in the top of the sixth when the Cardinals threatened with runners on the corners, but were unable to bring anyone across.
  • Cal U opened the game up with three in the sixth, four in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
  • The Cardinals got their run in the eighth inning. Junior shortstop Connor Watt (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) led the frame off with a single and scored on a double by sophomore catcher Riley Cameron (Vass, N.C./Union Pines).
GAME NOTES
  • Cameron led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with three doubles and a RBI.
  • Junior pitcher Logan Pillars (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls) was saddled with the loss. He went 2.1 innings and yielded two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Cal U pitcher Nick Riggle held the Cardinals scoreless over six innings despite allowing a baserunner in each inning on the mound.
