No. 21 Cardinals sweep Frostburg State, 3-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 19) – The No. 21 Wheeling University volleyball team swept Frostburg State 3-0 Monday night inside the McDonough Center.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Freshman Raegan Rosi (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led the Cardinals with a kill-dig double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs.
  • Juniors Kayla Bekier (Northwood, Ohio/Lake) and Lexi Reinert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) each finished with a nine kills.
  • Freshman setter Karly Niesen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) dished out 38 assists to guide the offense.
  • Senior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) paced the defense with 22 digs.
  • Junior Lexi Smith (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) chipped in six kills and had a trio of blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling was in control of the first set when it established a 17-7 lead.
  • The Bobcats managed to close the gap down to three, 23-20, but kills by Bekier and Rosi helped the Cardinals lock down the first set.
  • Wheeling established a big lead early in the second set to help take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Cardinals scored the set's first seven points and stayed out in front of Frostburg State to win the set at 25-16.
  • The two squads were locked at 11-11 in the third set, when the Cardinals went on a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 edge.
  • Frostburg State drew back within one point, but Wheeling closed the match out by taking nine of the final 12 points to secure the win.
 UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals and Bobcats will play again tomorrow, Tuesday, February 23 for a match beginning at 7 p.m. at Frostburg State's Bobcat Arena.
