No. 21 Cards post victory at Frostburg State, 3-0

FROSTBURG, Md. (Feb. 23) – The No. 21 Wheeling University volleyball team completed a season sweep of Frostburg State with a 3-0 win Tuesday night inside the Bobcat Arena.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Junior Lexi Smith (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) established a career-high with 13 kills.
  • Freshman Raegan Rosi (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) posted a kill-dig double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.
  • Senior Kaitlin Trace (Saint Paris, Ohio/Graham) chipped in eight kills on 10 attacks with a trio of blocks.
  • Juniors Kayla Bekier (Northwood, Ohio/Lake) finished with eight kills.
  • Freshman setter Karly Niesen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) tossed around 44 assists, one-shy of her season-high in a three-set match.
  • Senior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) led the defense with 30 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling led 9-7 in the first set when it went on to score seven-straight points to take control at 16-7. The Cardinals eventually closed out a 25-16 win in the first set.
  • The second set was much closer. The score was tied up a 20-20 late, when the Cardinals managed to take five of the next seven points, including a pair of Bekier kills, to earn a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Wheeling led 16-14 in the third set when it notched nine-straight points to close out the win. Trace posted three of the kills during the run which came on the serves of Niesen.
 UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals will close out the regular-season on the road with a trio of matches, beginning on Friday, February 26 at Notre Dame (Ohio) at 7 p.m.
