Men's Lacrosse drops season-opener to Chowan, 16-6

WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 21) – The Wheeling University men's lacrosse team made its return to the field for the first time since 2019, but were dealt a 16-6 loss by Chowan in a non-conference matchup to open the season on a cold sunny day at Bishop Schmitt Field.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Freshman Braiden Struss (Langley, British Columbia/Walnut Grove) led the team with three points on two goals and an assist.
  • Classmate Jacob Knippel (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood) tallied two goals.
  • Junior Mathew Anderson (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) posted three caused-turnovers and added two groundballs.
  • Junior goalie Dallin Isaacson (Reno, Nev./Earl Wooster) posted nine saves in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chowan got off to a quick start with a goal in the first thirty seconds and established a 3-0 lead by the six-minute mark of the first quarter.
  • Wheeling got on the board with just under two minutes to play in the opening period on a goal by freshman Brody Fawver (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual).
  • The momentum was short-lived, as Chowan scored off of the ensuing faceoff and eventually built up a 9-1 lead heading into halftime.
  • Struss scored to open the second half, but Chowan tacked on four-straight to take a 13-2 lead and command of the contest.
  • Wheeling out-scored Chowan over the final 25 minutes, but did not do enough to erase the deficit.
 UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals will look to get on track with a road trip to the northeast. Wheeling will play at Felician in New Jersey on Saturday, February 27 at 12 p.m. and then head to Molloy in New York the following day.
