Late goal deals men's soccer loss at Wesleyan, 2-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 21) – The Wheeling University men's soccer team began its spring 2021 season with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon.
 
THE RUNDOWN

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half that only saw seven total shots, Wesleyan got on the board on a penalty kick that slid inside the left post to make the score 1-0 in the 58th-minute.
  • The Cardinals answered right back with an opportunistic goal. Junior Miguel Martin (El Tigre, Venezuela, Marcet Football Academy) collected a miss played ball by a Bobcat defender in the box and finished to tie the match up.
  • Martin nearly gave Wheeling the lead a minute later with a shot on target, but it was directed off the net by the Wesleyan keeper.
  • West Virginia Wesleyan notched the game-winning goal in the 88th-minute when Charlie Naylor collected a corner kick and beat Wheeling goalkeeper Tyler Serman (Auburndale, Fla./Auburndale) on the right side of the net to make the score 2-1.
MATCH NOTES
  • Serman finished with a pair of saves in the loss.
  • Wheeling was out-shot 11-6, but both teams put four shots on target.
  • Wesleyan was awarded nine corners, compared to just two for Wheeling.

  • The Cardinals will look to get on track with a road trip to Maryland to take on Frostburg State on Sunday, February 28 at 2 p.m. (ET).
