No. 21 Wheeling tops West Liberty, 3-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (Feb. 19) – The No. 21 Wheeling University volleyball team claimed a 3-0 sweep of West Liberty Friday night inside the McDonough Center.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Junior Kayla Bekier (Northwood, Ohio/Lake) finished with a season-high 18 kills on 43 attacks (.256 hitting percentage).
  • Freshman Raegan Rosi (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) also turned in a season-high with 14 kills, while adding 10 digs defensively.
  • Freshman setter Karly Niesen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) tossed around 45 assists and chipped in 14 digs.
  • Senior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) led the defensive efforts with 23 digs.
  • Junior Lexi Smith (Portsmouth, Ohio/Notre Dame) and senior Kaitlin Trace (Saint Paris, Ohio/Graham) each posted four blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheeling trailed 13-10 early in the first set, before a 6-1 run put the Cardinals ahead 16-14.
  • Wheeling went on another run with the score 19-16, including a trio of consecutive points, to close out a 25-19 win.
  • West Liberty looked like it was ready to respond in the second set when it opened up a 5-1 lead early, but 10 of the next 11 points erased the deficit and put Wheeling in front 11-5.
  • The Cardinals never looked back and converted seven of the final eight points for a 25-14 set two win.
  • The Hilltoppers led 5-4 in the third set, when Wheeling went on a 10-1 run, including eight-straight points, to open up a 14-6 advantage.
  • West Liberty had a run of its own to make the score 15-11, but they were not able to overcome the deficit.
  • The Cardinals gave up only three scattered points to the Hilltoppers and ran away with a 25-14 set win to earn the sweep.
  • Wheeling was slotted at No. 21 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 poll revealed late Tuesday evening.
 UP NEXT
  • The Cardinals are currently scheduled to travel to Frostburg State on Tuesday, February 23 for a match beginning at 7 p.m.
  • The two squads will still need to make-up a previously postponed match from earlier this season. An announcement on a potential date for that match is expected soon.
