In each of the three sets, the Cardinals hitters had a hitting percentage of .287 or better. They move to 3-0 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play and improve to 12-4 overall with the win. They got things started right from the get-go and kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the game.
In the first set, the Cardinals and Battlers went back and forth to a 10-10 score for the first 20 points of the set. Wheeling would get the first advantage going on a 7-1 run to make the score 17-11. They would only allow five more points the rest of the set and went on to win the set 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. They picked up 15 kills on 35 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .286. Those 18 points were the most allowed by Wheeling in any of the three sets as they picked up their seventh sweep of the 2021 Fall season.
In set two, Wheeling jumped on the Battlers right away scoring seven of the first eight points of set two. Of those first seven points, senior
Lexi Reinert scored four of those seven points, picking up four of her six kills on the day during that run. Alderson Broaddus battled their way back and got the set to within four points and brought the score to 12-8. However, Wheeling finished the set on a 13-4 run and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-12 set win. They upped their hitting percentage to .382, racking up 17 kills on 34 total attacks, and were looking to end the match in three sets.
They did just that, winning the final set 25-16 and picking up their seventh sweep of the fall 2021 season. The hitters improved their hitting percentage even further, hitting at a .429 clip. They had 14 kills on 28 total attacks while committing just two errors in the set. After Alderson Broaddus took a 4-3 lead early on, Wheeling went on an 11-3 fun to take a 15-8 lead in the set. The two teams battled to an 18-16 score late in the set. Wheeling scored six of the final eight points in the set, and Kindall landed the final kill to give Wheeling the win and the sweep of the three-game set.
Kindall led the Cardinals offensive attack with 12 kills while Bekier followed it up with 11 kills of her own. They were the only two with double-digit kills and were helped out by a big day from their setter
Karly Niesen. Niesen led the way with 38 assists and one setting error in the win. The MEC's reigning defensive player of the week
Audrey Francis led the defense with 17 digs, with Niesen and Kindall following her effort with 11 kills each. Wheeling keeps their undefeated start to conference play going with the win, and looks to keep it going when they return home later this week.
