Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Volleyball (13-4, 4-0) was back inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center when they hosted Notre Dame College on Friday. They had to work for it, but they ended the night with a 3-0 sweep to move 4-0 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.
The first set was the most competitive of the three sets as the teams battled to a win by two scenario. After Wheeling built a 13-6 lead, Notre Dame battled back and tied the game at 24-24. The two teams traded the first four points of the set to make the score 26-26. Then, Wheeling turned to freshman
Riley Kindall to finish the set with two kills and give Wheeling a 28-26 win. Wheeling picked up a match-high 21 kills on 52 total attacks in the set for a .308 hitting percentage. They had a 1-0 lead in the set, but Notre Dame College showed they were prepared for a battle.
After the teams battled two a 4-4 score early in set two, it was the Falcons who got out in front 13-8. After a timeout by
Christy Benner, the Cardinals found their groove trying the game at 16-16. Wheeling would finish out the set scoring nine of the final 12 points in the set and won 25-20. Senior
Kayla Bekier was the leader of set two, getting the final three kills for Wheeling and helping them to battle back to take a 2-0 lead. It had been a battle all night, but Wheeling was looking to end things after three sets and squash any hope of a Falcon come back.
In the 3
rd set, Wheeling went on a tear to start things off getting out to a 16-9 lead. It looked like Wheeling was going to cruise to the sweep, but Notre Dame still had some fight in them. They worked their way back into the match and overtook the Cardinals leading 23-22 late in the set. However, Wheeling finished out the game scoring the final three points. Senior
Lexi Reinert slammed down the final kill, and Wheeling earned the 3-0 sweep to move to 4-0 in conference play to start the season. It was a hard-fought win and the Cardinal hitters continued their success with a team hitting percentage of .260.
Three different Cardinals led the Wheeling offensive attack each finishing with double-digit kills on the day. Reinert and Kindall less the way with 12 kills each in the win, while Bekier added 11 kills of her own. It was a big day for sophomore setter
Karlee Lois, who got the start and had a career-high 38 assists in the win. Senior
Audrey Francis led the way with 32 Digs in the win, while senior
Jenna Franks (17), Lois (13), and Kindall (10) each have double-digit digs on the day. The win keeps Wheeling firmly planted atop the MEC North Division as they continue on with conference play.
The Wheeling University Volleyball team is back in action when they head on the road on Tuesday to face West Liberty with tip-off at 7 PM.
