Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team was back home on Wednesday when they hosted Concord. They got on the board in the 88
th minute of the game, but it was too little too late as they fell to the Mountain Lions 3-1.
Throughout the game, Wheeling was able to control the ball offensively, but just wasn't able to find the net. The Cardinals outshot Concord 13-6 in that first half, but weren't able to find the net. They only put four of those shots on net. Concord only put two of their shots on net and both were saved by goalkeeper
Tyler Serman. Wheeling took the final four shots of the half over the final five minutes of the half, but nothing fell and the team's would go into halftime with the score sitting at 0-0. Wheeling had the offensive opportunities in the first half, they were just looking to capitalize on them in the second half.
However, it would be Concord that would find the net first in the second half, as they scored in the 46
th minute of the game. Concord's Francisco Salcedo took a pass from Piyo Debesay and put the ball in net, and took a 1-0 lead. The game stayed at that 1-0 score for the next 40 minutes as both teams continued to battle back and forth. Wheeling nearly got on the board in the 76
th minute when Armamdo Loynaz sent a shot towards the net in the 76
th minute. However, Concords goalkeeper made a diving stop to keep the ball out of the net. The game would remain 1-0 until the 83
rd minute of the game.
That is when Concord would score it's second goal of the night as Ted Penn found the net and gave the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead. Concord added another goal three minutes later and brought the score to 3-0 with four minutes to play. When Wheeling got the ball back, they turned to forward
Richard Afolayanka to try and spark something late. After he took a shot that was saved by the keeper, he came back and scored Wheeling's line goal of the game in the 88
th minute. It was a shot from about the five-yard line and it snuck its way into the top right corner of the net. That brought the game to its eventual final score of 3-1 as Wheeling was unable to mount a comeback.
In total, Wheeking took 24 shots in the game, with a majority of them coming from Loynaz. He accounted for 10 of the 24 shots taken by the Cardinals on the day, and put four of those shots on net. Afolayanka was the next biggest shot taker for the Cardinals, taking three shots in that second half, and putting two of those on net. On defense, Serman made there saves on the night while allowing three goals in the loss. The loss drops Wheeling to 4-9-1 on the season and 3-8-1 in conference play.
The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team is back in action on Saturday when they head on the road to face Davis & Elkins at 7 PM.
