Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Wheeling Falls to Davis & Elkins in Tight Contest

Wheeling, W. Va. – After falling in a close contest in their first meeting of the year, the Wheeling University Men's Soccer team (4-10-1, 3-9-1) went on the road Saturday to face Davis & Elkins. It was a close contest once again, but Wheeling ended up falling to the Senators 2-0.

Throughout the first half, Wheeling's defense played strong as the Senators were able to get off 11 shots in the half. Goalkeeper Harry Firth had a big first half, making six saves, and keeping the Senators off the board. He got the start in that first match-up of the year and had similar success. Wheeling got off three shots in that first half, and nearly took the lead right before halftime. Hugo Rodriguez fired a shot towards the bottom right corner of the net in the 42nd minute, but it was saved. The team's headed into the locker room with a scoreless tie as both looked to break through.

Wheeling was outshot in the first half 11-2, and was looking for ways to breakthrough. Their defense did a great job of keeping one of the best offenses in the MEC off the board. The shot by Rodriguez right before halftime was their lone shot on net, and they were hoping to carry that momentum into the second half. At the start of the second half it continued to be back and forth as neither team could break through for the first 10 minutes of the half. However, in the 52nd minute it was Davis & Elkins that finally came through and scored the first goal of the game. It was Daniel Cerezo who scored the goal and put the Senators up 1-0.

Davis & Elkins fired off 13 shots in the second half compared to one for Wheeling. The Cardinals shot came towards the end of the game when Armando Loynaz found a path to the net. Loynaz found a path to the net and took the shot in the 85th minute of what was then a 2-0 game. The shot was saved and the game was all but over after that. Davis & Elkins second goal came in the 71st minute from Davide Materazzi, and was the shot that eventually sealed the game. Wheeling played hard throughout the night but was not able to break through on the offensive side of the ball.

Three different Cardinals got shots off in the game, as Loynaz, Rodriguez, and Richard Afolayanka each had one shot. Rodriguez and Loynaz each put shots on goal for Wheeling. Firth played the full 90 minutes in net and was able to make eight saves in the game while facing 10 shots on net. Firth allowed five goals in the two games he played against Senators and made a total of 15 saves. Wheeling dropped both games of the season series with Davis & Elkins, but were able to play hard against one of the toughest teams in the MEC.

The Wheeling University Men's Soccer team is back in action on Wednesday when they head on the road to face Alderson Broaddus at 6 PM.
