Reinert Leads the Way in Volleyball Sweep over Frostburg State

Frostburg, MD. – The Wheeling University Volleyball team (11-4, 2-0) hit the road on Friday when they played their first road Mountain East Conference (MEC) game of the season. Senior Lexi Reinert led the way with 12 kills, as the Cardinals swept the Bobcats 3-0 to move to 2-0 in conference play.

The first set was back and forth throughout with the two teams trading points the entire set. After Wheeling took the early lead, Frostburg battled back and forced a win-by-two scenario. They traded the first two points of the extra time before Wheeling came back and won the set 26-24. Wheeling's hitters picked up 17 kills on 63 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .167. After battling throughout the first set, and looked to take some momentum into the second set.

Wheeling would take charge of the second set right from the get-go scoring seven of the first eight points in the set. It was a lead they would never relinquish as they won the set 25-18, and took a 2-0 lead in the match. Senior Kayla Bekier finished the set with two of the final three kills in the set, and Wheeling as a whole had a down set, only picking up nine kills, and having 10 attack errors in the set. Even though they had the lead, the Cardinals were looking to clean some things up in the third set as they looked for their second straight sweep.

Wheeling had a similar start to the third set, scoring seven of the first eight points, but they were able to clean up their errors from the second set. Their hitters cleaned up their act, with 14 kills in the set and raised their hitting percentage back up to .146. It was the Bobcats who would be committing the errors, with three attack errors in the final four points, and Wheeking would be able to pick up the 25-18 set win. They swept the match 3-0, and the win moved them to 2-0 in MEC play.

Reinert led the hitters on the day with 12 kills on 24 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .375. She was the only Cardinal with double-digit kills on the day, as freshman Mady Winters followed her up with 8 kills on the day. Senior Audrey Francis led the defensive effort with 35 digs on the day and senior Jenna Franks added 15 digs in the win. Sophomore Karly Niesen continued to set the ball well leading the way with 33 assists on the day.

The Wheeling University Volleyball team (11-4, 2-0) are back in action on Tuesday when they head back out on the road to face Alderson Broaddus at 7 PM.
