WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 28) - The Wheeling University's Women's Basketball team recently finished what they called a "Cards from Cards" community service project.
The team made close to 200 handmade greeting cards for the residents at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home to add some light to their lives during these uncertain times. The project was spearheaded by Assistant Coach
Alli DeLaney.
"I challenged our staff to find ways to follow our mission of service while practicing social distancing," said Wheeling Head Coach
Mike Llanas. "Service with and among others is a passion of our team and it has increasingly been frustrating that we could not physically find ways to serve."
The greeting cards included seasonal themes, bible verses, "thinking of you", and "hugs" through a card. The women's basketball team gave them their well wishes and prayed for a safe and healthy fall season.
"Service always brings our team closer together as we learn and experience life away from athletic competition," he added. "For example, we discovered some very talented artist, poets, and comedians among the team. We laughed, told stories about our past, and encouraged each other if we doubted a theme and thoughts on certain cards."
"We already have another project idea and cannot wait to get it started."
The greeting cards were delivered to Good Shepherd this past Thursday by the team.
