Late goals push Seton Hill past Wheeling in season opener, 3-1

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 5) - A pair of goals in the final six minutes of the match sent the Wheeling University men's soccer team to a 3-1 loss in the season-opening match at Seton Hill Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After 30 minutes of scoreless play, senior Lucas Fievet (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) got Wheeling on the board with an unassisted goal that made the score 1-0.
  • Seton Hill answered back 10 minutes later in the 41st-minute to tie the game up and sent the match into halftime tied at 1-1.
  • The Griffins had consecutive corner-kick attempts and a shot on goal early in the second half, but a save by junior goalkeeper Josh Zimmerman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) kept the game tied.
  • Wheeling had one of its best scoring chances in the 61st-minute when sophomore Andres Caceres (Bogota, Columbia) was denied by the SHU goalkeeper resulting in a corner kick.
  • Seton Hill notched the eventual game-winning goal in the 85th-minute and tacked on an insurance marker two minutes later to send Wheeling to the loss.
MATCH NOTES
  • Seton Hill held a 17-to-9 advantage in the shots department, but the Cardinals finished with a 5-to-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Both Fievet and Caceres posted three shot attempts. Two of Caceres' attempts were on-goal.
  • The Griffins' Daniel Van Gorp scored two goals off of the bench, including the game-winning goal, to propel Seton Hill to the win.
  • Last year the two teams opened the 2018 season with a 0-0 draw.
UP NEXT
  • Wheeling will open Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Wednesday, September 11 when they travel to South Euclid, Ohio to take on Notre Dame.
  • The Cardinals eliminated the Falcons in the semifinals of the MEC Tournament last season in a shootout.
