Mangado's goal propels men's soccer over Pitt-Johnstown, 1-0

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 14) – Sophomore Javier Mangado (La Rioja, Spain/ IES Praxedes Mateo Sagasta) scored the lone goal in the Wheeling University men's soccer team's 1-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, senior Lucas Fievet (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Keystone Oaks) connected with sophomore Javier Mangado (La Rioja, Spain/ IES Praxedes Mateo Sagasta) on a through ball that led to the breakaway attempt.
  • Mangado found the back of the net to break the tie and give Wheeling a 1-0 lead.
  • UPJ attempted two shots in the final five minutes and had a corner-kick attempt, but were unable to find an equalizer, allowing Wheeling to collect the road victory.
MATCH NOTES
  • Cardinal goalkeeper James Serman (Auburndale,Fla./Auburndale) recorded the shutout after stopping all five UPJ shots on goal. 
  • The match featured 27 shots between the two teams, but the Cardinals held the advantage. Wheeling totaled 19 shots, while the Mountain Cats had only nine. 
  • Mangado and junior Gaizka Redondo (Vizcaya, Spain/Salesianos Duesto) led the team with four total shots each.
