Cardinals clipped in overtime at Notre Dame, 2-1

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (Sept. 25) - The Wheeling University women's soccer team was dealt a 2-1 overtime loss in the 97th-minute at Notre Dame College Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Notre Dame scored the opening goal of the match in the 28th-minute on a ball from inside the box and held that lead through the remainder of the first half.
  • The Cardinals got the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half on a Falcon miscue. 
  • A Notre Dame defender attempted to head a loose ball back to her goalkeeper, but the ball went over the keeper's head and into the net for an own-goal that tied the game at 1-1.
  • Both teams had chances to score in the closing minutes of regulation, but neither team found the winner and the game headed to overtime.
  • Notre Dame notched the game-winning goal in the first overtime. 
  • A Falcon player got behind the Cardinal back-line and dribbled into the box from the right side. A quick cross and finish to the center of the box allowed Notre Dame to claim the 2-1 win.
MATCH NOTES
  • Senior goalkeeper Megan Herter (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) made five saves in the loss.
  • The Falcons out-shot the Cardinals 18-to-8 for the match and attempted all three shots in the overtime period.
